By-election win for Ukip: but will it repeat the SDP's journey?

In a column for the New Statesman, Professor Tim Bale draws parallels between Douglas Carswell’s by-election win in Clacton and Shirley Williams – who achieved a first by-election win for the Social Democratic Party in 1981. Carswell has become Ukip’s first MP after defecting from the Conservatives.
