Dr Javier Sajuria writes about the first round of the Chilean election, which took place last Sunday. Only 46 per cent of those eligible to vote actually did so, making it one of the lowest turnouts in the country’s history. Former president Sebastian Piñera won the first round but failed to avoid a run-off on December 17. Although most opinion polls had shown the right-wing billionaire with a clear lead of between 42 and 47 per cent, the latest results show that he received only 36.6 per cent of the ballots. The next-place candidate, Sen. Alejandro Guillier, the center-left candidate, received just under 23 per cent.
