Postgraduate

Our range of postgraduate research and taught programmes is expanding all the time and we invite you to join one of the most dynamic schools for research and postgraduate studies in the UK.

In addition to our well established taught masters programmes in MSc programmes and MPhil and PhD research degrees, we have introduced a range of new programmes, including Masters by Research Methods (MRes) under 1+3 scheme (1 year masters followed by 3 year PhD) that incorporates a research training component.

We offer potential postgraduates a lively and stimulating research atmosphere and pride ourselves on our commitment to scholarly excellence. Our aim is to foster an academic atmosphere that is conducive to enabling postgraduates at all levels to meet varied challenges of research study, including the cultivation of requisite technical skills, political imagination and empathy, objectivity, and the encouragement of personal commitment. Our postgraduate programme is overseen by a Graduate Studies Committee, which also organises a regular series of seminars where students have the opportunity to present papers and receive feedback on their work in progress from staff and fellow postgraduates.

Members of the School are happy to give advice to potential postgraduates. As a rule, we request applicants for the MPhil programme submit a synoptic outline of their proposed research so that we can gain a sense of their interests and of our ability to provide appropriate and expert supervision.

Research degrees

We welcome applications to undertake research in our areas of interest (see below). We would normally expect you to have an MA or equivalent in a subjected areas connected to the field of study of your research proposal. We advise you consult a potential supervisor before submitting a research proposal (2,000 words), which should include a hypothesis, key questions to be addressed by your research, methodology and a bibliography.

From September 2010 students are accepted to the PhD programme, confirmation of this registration is dependent on performance. Following an initial training-needs assessment, an individual programme of research training in thesis-relevant topics is drawn up and embodied in a personal learning contract. In most cases, the programme will require attendance at the College-based foundation course in research methods. All students attend a fortnightly workshop and present papers at regular intervals.
