Democracy in Plural Societies
This module aims to analyse the broad relationship between democratisation and ethno-national conflict.
It assesses the success or failure of a variety of policy approaches taken by governments and international organisations to regulate, resolve or manage ethno-national conflict. Coercive policies such as expulsion, forced migration, ‘ethnic cleansing’ and genocide are compared and contrasted with more consensual policies such as negotiated secession, national self-determination and different forms of power-sharing.
