Main Areas of Research:

My research focuses on the study of nationalism and ethnicity in the West with a particular emphasis on the study of Western nations without states. Throughout my work, I have taken a comparative approach to the study of national identity, nationalism, governance in multinational democracies, globalization and citizenship in the European Union. Currently I hold a Westfield Trust award to research the project ‘Religious Diversity and Social Cohesion in Britain and Spain' and I have recently completed the project ‘The Impact of Migration on National Identity' funded by a Leverhulme Trust Fellowship.

I am a co-editor of the journal Nations and Nationalism (Blackwell) and member of the advisory council of the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN). I have hold Visiting Fellowships at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Tampere (Finland), the Pompeu Fabra University and the Autónoma University (Barcelona), the UQAM (Montreal), the Austrian Academy of Science and the London School of Economics.

Currently I hold a Visiting Fellowship at the Centre for Global Governance of the London School of Economics.

I welcome applications from prospective PhD students in any of the following areas of research:
