Politics at Queen Mary can be combined with many other subjects. The teaching of joint honours undergraduates proceeds very much like that of single honours undergraduates, except that it is likely that you will do fewer Politics courses than the single honours undergraduate. Not everything that is compulsory for the single honours student is necessarily compulsory for you.
BA in History and Politics
This degree course provides students with the opportunity to understand the modern world by studying the evolution of political institutions side by side with the historical development of the major powers.
The degree operates within the course-unit structure. The first year is shared between introductory History and Politics courses. The second and third years may be divided equally between History and Politics, or may have a bias, in accordance with your interests, towards one or the other discipline. It is also possible after first year to take courses in other disciplines.
BSc (Econ) in Economics and
Politics
The study of Economics and Politics can be closely associated in a number of ways. For example, any informed discussion on the role of the state in modern society requires an appreciation of both the political and economic issues involved and how they relate to one another. This degree course is especially suited to those with an interest in public policy and governmental decision-making. The first year is shared between introductory Economics (including some statistics) and Politics courses. The second and third years may be divided equally between Economics and Politics, or may have a bias, in accordance with your interests, towards one or the other discipline. It is also possible after first year to take courses in other disciplines.
BA in Law and Politics
The Faculty of Laws and the Department of Political Studies at have jointly organised a BA degree course in Law and Politics which is the first of its kind in the University of London. It offers students the opportunity to study the closely related disciplines of Law and Politics side-by-side in a three-year programme. This programme provides a grounding in both subjects and allows considerable flexibility in the choice of specialisms through its range of optional papers.
Although it is not intended primarily for students wishing to qualify for a career in legal practice, the degree programme is so arranged that a student could, by choosing appropriate law options, obtain the usual exemptions from legal professional examinations. However, the course is designed chiefly as a sound academic basis for those who wish to pursue a career in which knowledge of the legal and governmental systems, and of the social environment in which they operate, is of major importance. The degree should appeal especially to those with an interest in studying public policy in its legal context.
The first year includes introductory courses in both Law and Politics. In the second year, further core subjects are taught in the two disciplines and various options can be chosen. In the third year, students are relatively free to develop their particular interests by choosing from a range of options in both Law and Politics. Thus, students have the option in their third year of specialising either in Law or in Politics, or maintaining the interdisciplinary balance which characterises the first two years of the degree course.
BA in Geography and Politics
This degree is designed for those who wish to extend their knowledge of political theory and practice in relation to the geographical bases of politics. The degree programme operates within the course-unit structure. The first year is shared between introductory Human Geography and Politics courses. The second and third years may be divided equally between Geography and Politics, or may have a bias, in accordance with your interests, towards one or the other discipline. It is also possible after first year to take courses in other disciplines.

This programme may be three or four years depending on whether the student has previous knowledge of Russian, and whether time is spent abroad.
